Air Canada has announced a 72-hour lockout for its 10,000 flight attendants represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), following the union’s notice of a potential strike starting August 16. Air Canada plans to phase out most flights over three days while seeking government arbitration to resolve the labor dispute and avoid unexpected travel disruptions.

This decision follows eight months of negotiations, including assistance from federal conciliators. On August 11, Air Canada offered a revised proposal with a 38% total compensation increase over four years, including improvements in pensions, benefits, ground pay, and crew rest, without requesting concessions from the union. Following CUPE’s move toward strike action, the airline initiated a phased lockout to ensure operational stability and reduce passenger impact.

We regret the impact a disruption will have on our customers, our stakeholders and the communities we serve. However, the disappointing conduct of CUPE’s negotiators and the union’s stated intention to launch a strike puts us in a position where our only responsible course of action is to provide certainty by implementing an orderly suspension of Air Canada’s and Air Canada Rouge’s operations through a lockout.
Michael Rousseau, President and Chief Executive of Air Canada

Travelers should note the planned suspension schedule:

  • Initial flight cancellations begin on August 14
  • Increase in canceled flights on August 15
  • Complete halt of Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge operations on August 16

To support passengers during this period, Air Canada has put several measures in place:

  • Full refunds for canceled flights
  • Flexible rebooking options at no extra cost
  • Coordination with other carriers to provide alternative travel options
  • Passengers are urged to use online tools for flight updates due to possible wait times

This lockout emphasizes to passengers the importance of checking updates and organizing travel plans in advance. The phased halt in flights gives passengers time to make necessary changes and reduce travel disruptions. Passengers traveling abroad or during the busy summer season are advised to stay updated and keep flexible plans.

The current labor action demonstrates how disputes in the airline industry can directly affect passenger plans. By providing advance notice and structured procedures, Air Canada aims to give travelers time to manage disruptions and make informed decisions about their trips, emphasizing the need for preparedness during high-traffic travel periods.
