Amtrak’s Winter Sale Cuts Fares but Skips Christmas
Amtrak has launched a Winter Wanderlust Sale with savings of up to 30% on selected US train journeys, but anyone planning to travel over Christmas or Valentine's weekend will find gaps in the offer. Bookings close on 12 November 2026, with discounted travel available between 1 December and 14 March 2027. The lower fares apply to certain trains and seats, not every departure.
The offer covers Coach seats on named trains such as the Northeast Regional, California Zephyr and Coast Starlight, plus Business Class on Acela. The discount is measured against Amtrak's Flex fare, not necessarily the price a passenger would otherwise pay. Some departures may have no sale seats left, and the lowest advertised prices are for one-way journeys rather than return tickets.

Amtrak's risk-free policy permits a full refund if a reserved ticket bought directly with the operator is cancelled within 24 hours of purchase and before departure. After that, sale tickets can still be cancelled before the train leaves, but only half the fare is returned. Missing the train without cancelling means losing the ticket's value. Check the refund rules before paying for separate connections.
A $23 Boston–Providence ticket is a short Coach journey, whereas advertised longer trips, such as Chicago–Los Angeles at $128, do not include sleeping accommodation. Compare each leg separately if buying a return trip: a discount may appear on one departure but not the other. Anyone needing flexible dates should weigh the saving against the risk of losing half their fare if plans change.
