Almería Airport to Halt Flights for Six Days
Almería Airport is preparing for a complete pause in flight operations while its only runway is rebuilt as part of a major infrastructure programme. The work will renew worn surfaces, strengthen the airfield and replace older lighting with LED equipment. Airlines have already been notified so they can revise their schedules, reroute services or move operations to another airport while the most disruptive phase is under way.

During the shutdown, crews will work around the clock on the runway’s most critical sections, removing 17.5 centimetres of existing asphalt and excavating deeper layers for reinforcement. Once flights resume, the remaining work will return to overnight periods. The runway was last renewed in 2007, making this the airport’s first major resurfacing programme in more than two decades of operation.
Almería Airport serves the city and several popular coastal destinations, including Cabo de Gata, Aguadulce, Roquetas de Mar and Mojácar. These places will remain accessible by road, but anyone planning a February 2028 trip may need to fly through another airport and continue overland by bus or hire a car. The impact will depend on which routes airlines retain, divert or temporarily remove from sale.
The closure is still far enough away for airlines to rebuild their timetables, but travellers should not assume a familiar route will operate unchanged. Anyone considering a winter break should wait for confirmed flight schedules before booking non-refundable transfers or accommodation. The six-day shutdown is short, yet it could affect an entire trip if the replacement airport adds several hours to the journey.
