Aer Lingus has confirmed a change to its travel document rules for flights between the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom. From 25 February 2026, passengers will need a valid passport or Irish passport card to board. The update applies despite the Common Travel Area and replaces the long-standing acceptance of alternative photo identification on these routes.

Under the revised policy, documents such as driving licences and Garda age cards will no longer be accepted for Aer Lingus or Aer Lingus Regional flights operating between Ireland and the UK. The airline says the move aligns document checks across its network. Passengers arriving at the airport without the required documents risk being denied boarding once the rule takes effect.

What changes on 25 February

  • Passport or Irish passport card required on Ireland–UK flights
  • Other photo ID no longer accepted
  • Belfast routes and Dublin–Donegal remain exempt
  • Emerald Airlines domestic services unaffected

Alongside the passport requirement, non-Irish nationals heading to the UK must hold an Electronic Travel Authorisation. This applies to EU citizens and most other nationalities outside the British Isles and costs €18 (£16). The ETA is linked to a passport, usually issued within a day, and remains valid for up to two years or until the passport expires.

The change alters how short hops between Ireland and Britain are planned. Trips to cities such as London, Manchester, Edinburgh or Cardiff now require the same document checks as longer international journeys. Aer Lingus has opened dedicated helplines to assist those caught out before they can obtain a passport, offering refunds, vouchers or rebooking options.

The updated rules show tighter border checks around the UK. Journeys that once relied on minimal document checks now require more planning, even on well-known routes. Documents need to be checked in advance, as last-minute changes are no longer possible and airport staff will not accept alternative forms of ID at boarding.
