A Decade of Innovation: Celebrating Air New Zealand's Dreamliner Milestone

Yesterday marked the 10th anniversary of Air New Zealand's first Boeing 787 Dreamliner flight, celebrating a decade since the groundbreaking aircraft landed in Auckland on July 11, 2014. As the global launch customer, Air New Zealand has since redefined long-haul travel for millions of passengers.

Since its debut, the Dreamliner has carried over 11 million customers on 59,000 flights, amassing 475,000 flying hours. This aircraft has significantly transformed the onboard experience, providing unmatched comfort and efficiency.

The Dreamliner introduced revolutionary features like large electronically dimmable windows, cabin pressurization at 6,000 feet for a fresher travel experience, and an onboard turbulence management system. These innovations have captivated passengers from day one, enhancing both customer comfort and the flying experience for pilots.

Air New Zealand's Chief Customer and Sales Officer, Leanne Geraghty, highlights the Dreamliner's impact on the airline. The Dreamliner's design, which is 20% more fuel-efficient than other similarly sized aircraft, aligns with the airline's decarbonization goals, making it a pivotal investment for sustainable travel. The Dreamliner also enabled Air New Zealand to expand its network, including the flagship route to New York in 2022.

In addition to technological advancements, the Dreamliner has been recognized for its role in enhancing health and wellness during flights. The aircraft's improved cabin air quality, higher humidity levels, and reduced noise levels contribute to a more restful and pleasant journey, helping to mitigate common travel discomforts such as dehydration and jet lag.

Looking ahead, Air New Zealand plans to retrofit its existing Dreamliner fleet with new cabin interiors, including a redesigned Business Premier cabin and an innovative hard shell Premium Economy seat. Additionally, the airline has eight new Dreamliners on order, with the first delivery expected in 2025. These new aircraft will feature the highly anticipated Skynest, offering further enhancements to the customer experience.

In 2004, Air New Zealand placed its first order for the 787 Dreamliner, with significant milestones following, such as the inaugural commercial flight from Auckland to Perth on September 12, 2014. The airline’s Dreamliners offer an enhanced onboard experience with large windows, modern LED lighting, higher humidity, and a smoother ride.

As Air New Zealand continues to innovate, the next generation of Dreamliners promises to elevate the travel experience even further. The legacy of the Dreamliner marks a significant chapter in the airline's history, reflecting a decade of progress and a future of continued innovation.
