Recent data has revealed a significant decline in Watford's bus services, raising concerns for travelers relying on public transport. As government figures indicate a record low in the number of licensed buses and coaches, tourists and visitors to Watford might need to consider alternative travel options.

According to a Department for Transport report, only 78 buses and coaches were licensed in Watford at the end of 2023, down from 81 the previous year. This marks a substantial decrease of 64% since 2014.

The situation across Hertfordshire is similar, with 1,702 buses and coaches reported at the end of last year, compared to 1,747 the year before, representing a 24% decline since 2014.

Silviya Barrett from the Campaign for Better Transport noted that while schemes like the £2 bus fare cap have temporarily increased bus passenger numbers, long-term funding is essential to stop the ongoing cuts to bus services. For travelers, this means potential disruptions and reduced availability of bus services in Watford.

A spokesperson for Hertfordshire County Council admitted that the county has seen a steady decline in bus mileage over the past decade, mirroring the national trend. The spokesperson highlighted the challenges faced by the bus industry, including a sharp decline in passengers during the pandemic and a widespread shortage of drivers and skills.

Despite these issues, Hertfordshire County Council is working with local bus operators through the Intalink Enhanced Partnership to maintain as much of the bus network as possible. For visitors, this collaboration aims to ensure reliable bus services in the face of these challenges.

The council also secured £29.7 million from the government for their Bus Service Improvement Plan last year. This funding aims to improve bus service frequencies, expand the HertLynx demand-responsive transport service, introduce reduced fare initiatives, enhance highways infrastructure for bus travel, and provide better information for passengers.

For tourists visiting Watford, it's advisable to check the latest bus schedules and consider alternative transportation options such as taxis, ridesharing services, or renting a car to ensure a smooth travel experience.
