Southwest Changes Boarding Rules and Adds New Winter Destinations for 2026
Southwest Airlines will start using assigned seating on all flights booked from January 27, 2026, onward. This change moves away from the airline’s previous open seating practice. When booking their flights, travelers can pick their seats in advance, including the opportunity to purchase premium seating for a more enhanced experience. The new seating arrangement will also apply to travelers connecting through international airline partners like Icelandair and China Airlines.
The airline has extended its winter schedule through March 4, 2026, adding seasonal routes to meet growing demand. These include:
- Flights connecting the Northeast with Florida • Routes linking the Upper Midwest to Phoenix and Palm Springs • Seasonal service between Orlando and the following cities: Boston, Portland (Maine), Salt Lake City, and Tulsa
Travelers flying to Florida can now access natural sites such as Blue Spring State Park. This park is known for its winter gatherings of manatees. The Shark Valley Loop in the Everglades is a popular spot for wildlife viewing and cycling. Wekiwa Springs State Park near Orlando offers swimming and kayaking opportunities. They provide a less crowded option for travelers seeking a quieter environment.
In the Southwest, seasonal flights to Phoenix and Palm Springs enable visits to locations like the Desert Botanical Garden in Papago Park. Hiking trails within South Mountain Preserve offer outdoor activities. The Agua Caliente Indian Canyons provide desert landscapes suitable for exploration. These areas attract visitors looking for outdoor recreation in milder winter climates. Local golf courses remain popular with visitors looking to enjoy mild winter weather.
