Volcano erupts in Iceland for the fourth time in four months: photos and videos
A volcano has erupted on the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland for the fourth time in four months.
In a video shot from a coast guard helicopter, fountains of molten rock fly out of a long fissure in the ground, and lava is spreading rapidly in both directions, the Associated Press reports.
The Icelandic Meteorological Center (IMO) reported that the volcano erupted between Hagafell and Stora-Skogfell on the peninsula, in the same area where the previous eruption occurred on February 8.
IMO experts counted about 80 earthquakes. The length of the fault is estimated at about three kilometers, which is roughly the size of the last eruption in February, when all residents were evacuated from the village of about four thousand people.
Most of the residents of Grindavik have moved in with friends or relatives. A few of them who managed to return home after the previous eruption were evacuated again. The Icelandic government has already introduced a bill that will allow residents to sell their homes to a state-owned company.
Since mid-December, there have been four volcanic eruptions on the peninsula, and during one of them in January, lava swallowed up three houses near the northern foothills of the village.
As reported by TravelWise, Iceland, known for its breathtaking scenery and natural wonders, has recently experienced a drop in tourist interest following volcanic eruptions, especially the Svartsengi volcano.
