UK Airport Drop-Off Fees Climb as Free Options Fade

UK airport drop-off charges continue to rise, with London Stansted introducing one of the latest increases. Drivers now pay £10 for up to 15 minutes in the express zone, up from £7, placing it among the most expensive in the country. Longer stays of up to 30 minutes now cost £28. Earlier this year, London Gatwick raised its own fee to the same £10 level.
Other airports have followed a similar path. Glasgow and Aberdeen raised their charges to £7 for 15 minutes, while Bristol introduced an £8.50 fee for just 10 minutes near the terminal. Heathrow and Luton charge £7 for 10 minutes, while London City sits at £8. Manchester offers a lower £5 rate, though only for five minutes, making short stays tightly limited.
"Pricing people out at the kerbside does not suddenly make public transport viable - it just pushes more cost onto workers, businesses and the taxi community."
Current- Drop-Off Charges Across UK Airports
- Stansted: £10 (15 minutes)
- Gatwick: £10 (10 minutes)
- Heathrow / Luton: £7 (10 minutes)
- Bristol: £8.50 (10 minutes)
- Glasgow / Aberdeen: £7 (15 minutes)
- Manchester: £5 (5 minutes)
A small number of airports still offer free options. Birmingham allows short stays without charge for up to 10 minutes, while Inverness offers up to 15 minutes free.
Elsewhere in Europe, the situation is different. Airports such as Venice Marco Polo, Milan Malpensa and Ljubljana still offer free short-term drop-off areas close to the terminal. Paris Charles de Gaulle and Orly also allow limited free access. This makes short stops easier and removes the need to think about extra charges for quick drop-offs.
In the UK, avoiding these fees often means leaving the car further from the terminal and either taking a shuttle or walking the rest of the way. Even a quick drop-off can take longer than expected, especially at busy times. Free areas are not always nearby, so timing matters more. A short stop outside the terminal is no longer a quick in-and-out and now usually comes with a charge.
