Travelers have been warned about the increasing incidence of dengue fever and malaria
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a warning that mosquito-borne infections contracted during travel are returning to pre-pandemic levels. These include dengue fever and malaria, both of which can lead to serious illness in those infected.
The agency emphasized the importance of travelers taking precautions to reduce their health risks while traveling abroad. This warning comes after recently confirmed cases in the UK from individuals who have traveled abroad, as reported by Yahoo.
The agency found that in 2023, 634 cases of dengue fever were reported among travelers returning through England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. This figure is very similar to that of 2019 when 790 cases were reported.
Additionally, from January to October 2023, 1,637 cases of malaria were confirmed in England. This marks a return to pre-pandemic levels, similar to the 1,719 cases reported in the UK in 2019.
