The UK will allow selling wine in pints, returning the old measure of volume
For the first time in 50 years, the UK has allowed wine to be sold in pints. This became possible after the UK left the European Union.
From now on, it will be possible to buy a 568 ml bottle of wine in stores, as well as in pubs, clubs, and restaurants. The government announced this decision on December 27, 2023, Babel reports, citing a press release from the British government.
It should be noted that in 1973, after the UK joined the European Union, still wine could not be sold in 200 ml bottles and sparkling wine could not be sold in 500 ml bottles. Thus, according to the law, pubs must sell wine in small (125 ml), medium (175 ml), or large (250 ml) glasses.
From now on, in 2024, the country will return to the imperial measure, and UK winemakers will be able to place their 200, 500, and 568 ml bottles of wine on the shelves. It is noted that the business will not be legally obliged to sell wine in pints, which will provide producers and consumers with some freedom of choice in the domestic market.
