Thailand launches a 50,000 Thai baht compensation programme for tourists who may be injured while travelling
The Thai government has launched a new compensation programme for tourists vacationing in the country in the event of an emergency. Thus, tourists who suffer during their stay in Thailand will be able to claim monetary compensation in different amounts, depending on the case and further necessary expenses.
In total, 50,000 Thai baht was allocated for the programme, which was organized for the 2024 fiscal year at the initiative of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. This was reported in the Pattaya Mail.
Thus, in order to receive compensation, foreign citizens must have valid passports with tourist visas and stay in Thailand from January 1 to August 31, 2024. It is noted that foreigners will be able to claim payments only if the incident occurred due to: crimes against the body and life, accidents, bodily injury or death due to theft, rape, and public danger, among others.
In addition, travellers or their relatives must submit applications within 15 days of the incident or diagnosis, including copies of passports, medical reports, police reports, and documents of the legal heir in case of death.
Claims can be submitted by email or post to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, provincial offices and Tourist Assistance Centres at Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang International Airports.
The amount of compensation per person depends on the case:
- for death or dismemberment - up to 1,000,000 baht per person;
- for permanent disability, loss of sight or total disability that prevents the performance of any professional duties - 300,000 baht;
- for medical and domestic transportation costs within Thailand - up to 500,000 baht.
