In the heart of London, near London Bridge, lies one of the city’s darkest and most intriguing sites—the Old Operating Theatre. This unique museum offers a rare glimpse into 19th-century medicine and allows visitors to experience just how far medical practices have evolved since those days.

Visitors can reach the museum by ascending an old staircase leading to the attic of a church. This space, with its original oak beams marked by the passage of time, was once part of St. Thomas’s Hospital. Here, herbs were dried for medicinal use, and apothecaries crafted remedies to treat illnesses until the operating theatre appeared in the 19th century.

Spectacular Surgeries Without Anesthesia

The operating theatre itself is a chilling sight, resembling a horrifying gallery. In the 19th century, women were brought here and firmly strapped onto a wooden table, while students and practicing doctors crowded around to observe. With no anesthetics or antiseptics, the surgeons’ main goal was to perform operations as quickly as possible to minimize suffering. The room was noisy, with students smoking and energetically discussing the procedures as someone on the table fought for life.

This grim operating theatre remained hidden for almost a century. It was boarded up in the late 19th century and wasn’t rediscovered until the 1950s when a historian stumbled upon it. Today, it serves as a museum documenting the challenging history of medicine—from herbs and potions to chilling surgical methods. The exhibits evoke mixed feelings: admiration for the courage of doctors and patients of the past, as well as gratitude for modern medical advancements.

Immersion in the Atmosphere of the Past

The Old Operating Theatre is open for visits from Thursday to Sunday. It’s more than just a museum; it’s a portal into the past, where every artifact feels like a remnant of forgotten history. During Halloween, when the spine-tingling atmosphere is particularly vivid, this spot is especially appealing to those who wish to dive into the mystique and forgotten horrors of history.

The Old Operating Theatre is a true gem for those interested in history and anatomy, unafraid to look at the medical past unfiltered. Prepare for a unique experience that shows how far medicine has advanced and the legacy left by those bygone days.
