Latvia begins confiscation of cars with Russian license plates: what will be the fines?
On February 15, amendments to the Law on Road Traffic came into force in Latvia. They allow seizing cars with Russian license plates and transferring them to Ukraine as humanitarian aid.
Owners of cars with Russian license plates could either re-register them in Latvia by February 14 or leave the country. If they failed to do so, their cars would be subject to confiscation. In addition, the owners face a fine of 750 to 2000 euros, Delfi reports.
The Ministry of Justice of Latvia has noted that in the context of Russia's aggression against Ukraine, the presence of cars with Russian license plates in the country is unacceptable.
As you know, since September 12, 2023, Latvia has also banned the entry of cars with Russian registration. An exception was made only for diplomats and transit through the country, which can last no more than 24 hours. In the latter case, it is necessary to submit an application for border crossing in advance with information about the vehicle, driver, and the time of the car's stay in Latvia.
