Karuizawa Prepares for New Upper-Luxury Mountain Stay

IHG Hotels & Resorts plans to open its first Regent resort in Japan, Regent Karuizawa, in 2028. The development includes 58 guest units, featuring rooms and villas, in Karuizawa, a well-known mountain destination in Nagano Prefecture. The region is set among forests and natural hot springs, with Mount Asama in view, offering a tranquil escape just an hour from Tokyo by Shinkansen. The town’s balance of convenience and picturesque landscapes continues to draw travelers in search of mountain escapes.
The resort will provide a variety of facilities to enhance guests’ experiences. Created by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, the property will feature:
- Multiple dining venues with scenic views
- A wellness center including a spa and onsen
- A fitness center for physical activity and recreation
Regent Karuizawa will serve as IHG’s first mountain-focused upper-luxury property in Japan, complementing the current Hotel Indigo Karuizawa and the upcoming Regent Kyoto. The design is intended to deliver comfort within a natural setting while upholding the hallmark qualities of the Regent brand.

Visitors to the area can also discover a variety of nearby attractions. Shiraito Falls is a broad waterfall set within dense forest, providing options for hiking and photography. Visitors can explore Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza, offering outdoor shops and restaurants in a scenic setting. Visitors can explore trails around Kumoba Pond, where the autumn colors create a striking backdrop for leisurely walks and nature observation. These locations make the town appealing to visitors, regardless of whether their stay is a day or several days.
Additional attractions include Hoshino Onsen, offering natural hot springs for relaxation and wellness. Karuizawa Ski Resort provides winter activities like skiing and snowboarding, easily reachable from the town center. The Karuizawa 72 Golf North Course provides golfers with challenging layouts amid panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. These recreational options complement the resort’s facilities, giving visitors a variety of ways to enjoy their stay.

The launch of Regent Karuizawa increases high-end lodging choices for travelers from Japan and abroad. The area offers guests integrated experiences that include nature, relaxation, and recreational opportunities in one setting. The launch highlights Karuizawa as a versatile destination for year-round travel, suitable for short getaways or longer stays, and demonstrates the increasing interest in high-standard mountain experiences while contributing to the area’s tourism growth.
