Anantara Chiang Mai Resort in northern Thailand has announced a new activity that links a cooking class with a cruise on the Mae Ping River. The program begins with a tuk-tuk ride to a local market where participants are introduced to common Thai ingredients. After visiting the market, guests board a classic Nam Jit teak boat to continue their journey, sailing along the city's central waterway.

Once on board, travelers participate in preparing a variety of popular Thai and northern dishes under the guidance of experienced chefs. Recipes include tom yum soup, green curry, kao soi noodles, khung lai curry, and nam prik ong condiment. The dishes are eaten during the cruise, providing a practical dining element to the activity. Prices are set at THB 3,800 for the class and cruise, or THB 4,800 with the market visit. Reservations must be made one day in advance.

“The Spice Spoons cooking experience abroad Nam Jit is a truly unique way to discover the soul of Chiang Mai. It reflects Anantara’s promise to connect travellers with the authentic essence of each destination – in this case, through food, community, and the beauty of the river."
Arnaud Béril, Cluster General Manager of Anantara Chiang Mai Resort and Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort

The initiative gives visitors an additional way to interact with Chiang Mai beyond conventional tours. Instead of just sightseeing, the activity merges cooking lessons with a scenic river journey. This approach appeals to travellers eager to participate directly in local cultural activities, experiencing them in an interactive and engaging manner. By combining cooking with travel, this experience allows participants to make dishes, immerse themselves in local customs, and explore the city’s scenic locations, creating an authentic, hands-on adventure.

The market tour portion also offers a deeper look into local food networks and traditional culinary practices. Guests explore essential ingredients of northern Thai cuisine and are guided on how to modify them for preparation at home. Observing the lively market environment allows visitors to see firsthand how culinary traditions are woven into everyday life. This part shows how Chiang Mai’s everyday life and culinary habits are deeply linked to local ingredients and cooking practices, providing visitors with a rich and immersive encounter of the city’s cultural essence.

This project embodies an international trend where travelers look for experiences that combine enjoyment with direct, practical involvement. In Chiang Mai, these events highlight how local businesses are reshaping their offerings to meet the changing tastes and expectations of modern travelers. Visitors can engage directly with traditional customs, gaining a closer, participatory perspective on city life. By being actively involved, they slowly build practical skills and understanding, becoming fully part of the city’s rhythm and enjoying authentic, memorable experiences.
