Cathay Cargo Terminal Leads with Innovative Sustainability Initiatives
In a groundbreaking move, the Cathay Cargo Terminal has become the first cargo facility in Hong Kong to implement 50% recycled plastic cargo cover sheets for all its export cargo shipments. This significant leap from the previous minimum of 30% recycled content underscores a strong commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship within the air cargo industry.
The initiative, resulting from an extensive collaboration between Cathay Cargo Terminal and its suppliers, underwent rigorous testing both in laboratories and through real-world trials with Cathay Cargo throughout 2023. Set for a full-scale implementation in March 2024, this innovation not only marks a pivotal step towards sustainable operations but also sets a new benchmark for the industry at large.
Tom Owen, Cathay Director Cargo, emphasized the critical role of sustainability in the future of air cargo, noting that the adoption of recycled plastic cover sheets is a testament to Cathay Cargo's dedication to environmental responsibility. Meanwhile, Michelle Fok, Cathay Subsidiaries Head of Sustainable Development, highlighted the importance of embracing the circular economy to minimize waste and extend the lifecycle of products. Since 2017, the terminal has recycled 100% of the plastic sheets from import cargo shipments, underscoring its commitment to reducing reliance on virgin plastic and exploring sustainable alternatives.
Furthermore, Cathay Cargo Terminal has also distinguished itself as the first facility in Hong Kong to participate in the IATA Environmental Assessment (IEnvA) programme as of October 2023. This initiative aligns companies supporting the aviation industry with globally recognized environmental and sustainability standards, encouraging continuous improvement in environmental management systems.
Mark Watts, Cathay Cargo Terminal Chief Operating Officer, shared his enthusiasm for the IEnvA programme's role in enhancing waste management systems and reducing the use of virgin plastics in cargo operations. He looks forward to sharing insights on "Circularity in Action – Waste Management at the Cargo Terminal" at the upcoming IATA World Cargo Symposium in Hong Kong on 13 March 2024, hoping to inspire other facilities in the region to embrace sustainable practices.
This series of sustainability initiatives by Cathay Cargo Terminal not only demonstrates leadership in environmental responsibility but also paves the way for the broader air cargo industry to adopt more sustainable practices, ensuring a greener future for global logistics operations.
