Boeing orders pilots to check seats after disturbing incident with Latam Airlines plane
Boeing has issued recommendations to crews operating 787 Dreamliners to thoroughly inspect pilot seats in connection with the investigation into the disturbing incident on a Latam Airlines flight last week.
As a reminder, 50 people were injured during the sudden descent of a 787 flying from Australia to New Zealand due to a flight attendant's error. According to the BBC, people hit their heads on the ceiling and were injured.
It is believed that the incident was caused by an accidental activation of a switch by a flight attendant, which removed the lock from the pilot's seat and threw him onto the steering wheel.
Boeing notes that the investigation into the causes of the LA800 incident is ongoing. "We took precautionary measures by reminding the 787 operators of a service bulletin issued in 2017 that contained instructions for checking and maintaining seat switches in the cabin," Boeing said in a statement.
Latam Airlines claims to be cooperating with the authorities in the investigation. One of the passengers is reportedly in serious condition.
After the pilot hit the steering wheel and the plane began to descend rapidly, the crew managed to regain control and avoid the crash.
As previously reported by TravelWise, evidence is being collected, including the seizure of voice and flight data recorders in the cockpit.
