Belfast Opens a UK-First Car Park for Blue Badge Holders
Belfast International Airport has opened what it describes as the first dedicated accessible car park at a UK airport. The purpose-built area replaces standard parking spaces with bays designed specifically for Blue Badge holders. Located close to the terminal entrance, it gives pedestrians a more direct route into the building and reduces the need to cross areas used by moving vehicles, addressing a longstanding concern for passengers requiring assistance.

Plans for the facility were shaped by 18 months of consultation involving the Consumer Council and Belfast International Airport’s Accessibility Forum. The airport says the layout provides enough capacity for current demand while allowing future expansion. Accessibility representatives welcomed the purpose-built design and call points, although the forum has also recommended adding a covered walkway between the parking area and terminal building to improve protection in poor weather.
The change makes flights through Belfast International easier to consider for visitors whose mobility needs previously made airport parking more complicated. Once inside Northern Ireland, accessible trips can include central Belfast, Titanic Belfast and the city’s Maritime Mile, while road journeys can extend to Belfast Castle or the Causeway Coastal Route. The benefit begins before check-in by reducing distance, road crossings and uncertainty on arrival at the terminal.
A dedicated facility does not remove every obstacle, but it gives disabled passengers clearer information about where they can park and how to request help after arriving. Blue Badge users should keep their badge displayed and allow time to use a call point if assistance is required. The proposed covered walkway remains an important next step, particularly at an airport where rain can complicate the short journey indoors.
