WestJet’s Winter Map Adds Five New Sun Routes
WestJet will add five seasonal routes linking Canadian cities with Mexico, Belize, the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica during winter 2026/27. The expansion introduces the airline’s first service to Mérida and gives Winnipeg two additional direct options. Regina and Ottawa also gain new links to warmer destinations. The routes reinforce WestJet’s focus on leisure destinations across Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America. At the winter peak, the airline plans to serve 50 warmer-weather destinations from 15 Canadian cities. Sunwing Vacations is also adding packages for Ottawa–Liberia and restoring options for Puerto Plata and Roatán. Its winter package programme runs between 1 November 2026 and 30 April 2027 and is already on sale.
The new flights broaden access to places with very different holiday options. Mérida provides a base for Yucatán architecture, food and history, while Belize City opens routes towards Caribbean islands and inland sites. Punta Cana adds another beach option from Winnipeg; San José del Cabo brings Regina closer to Baja California Sur; and Liberia offers Ottawa residents easier access to Costa Rica’s Pacific coast and north-western national parks.
Weekly frequencies limit flexibility, so these flights will work best when accommodation and leave dates can be matched to the operating day. Their main benefit is avoiding a domestic connection through a larger Canadian hub, which can shorten winter journeys and reduce disruption points. Prices, baggage allowances and package conditions still need comparison, particularly because a direct route is not automatically the cheapest choice for every departure date.
