Alaska Airlines Boosts College Tour Opportunities for BIPOC Students
In a noteworthy initiative, Alaska Airlines, in collaboration with several local organizations, has recently facilitated a college tour for over 60 BIPOC high school juniors from Seattle and Portland. This educational journey, which occurred last month, allowed these students to explore several historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) across Atlanta, Georgia and other East Coast locations.
The partnership with organizations like UNCF and Self Enhancement, Inc. (SEI) was crucial in making this trip possible. Anthony Deloney, Director of Development at SEI, expressed that such tours greatly encourage and motivate students by allowing them to visualize themselves in these academic environments, boosting their confidence and educational aspirations.
This tour is part of Alaska Airlines' ongoing commitment to support educational opportunities, especially for communities lacking proximity to such institutions. The airline's contribution, over 18 years in partnership with UNCF, includes more than 20 million miles to assist students in attending college tours, underlining their long-term dedication to educational equity.
Moreover, the initiative extends beyond just the tours. SEI, a pivotal organization in North Portland, plays a significant role in supporting Black students and their families by addressing educational and economic barriers. This partnership not only highlights the importance of access to higher education but also enhances the broader community engagement of Alaska Airlines in the Pacific Northwest.
