Venice will again charge an entry fee for day visitors during peak periods in 2026, continuing efforts to manage high tourist numbers in the historic city. The system will apply on selected dates between April and July, mainly from Friday to Sunday. The number of chargeable days has increased to 60 this year, compared with 54 in 2025, as authorities continue testing measures intended to ease pressure on busy streets and public transport.

The fee is charged during peak hours, between 8:30 am and 4 pm. Outside these hours, entry to the city remains free. Visitors planning a day trip must register in advance through an online platform and obtain a QR code, which may be checked at several control points, including areas near Santa Lucia railway station and other main arrival routes into the city.

Several groups are exempt from paying the fee, including residents, students, workers and visitors staying overnight in local accommodation. Travellers with hotel bookings still need to register online to obtain a QR code, although the payment is not required because accommodation taxes already apply. Spot checks may take place at key entry points to confirm valid registration.

The measure is intended to reduce very high numbers of day visitors, which can make streets crowded and put extra pressure on public boats and everyday services, especially in the busiest months. Venice has experienced a long-term decline in its resident population, which has fallen below 50,000, while visitor numbers remain high. Authorities view the entry system as one way to balance tourism levels with daily life in the city.

“It represents a useful tool for managing tourist flows and ensuring a better balance between residents and visitors."
Michele Zuin, councillor

Planning ahead is important when organising short trips to Venice during spring and early summer, as the entry fee applies on selected dates and hours. Checking the calendar in advance helps avoid paying a higher last-minute charge or facing possible fines during controls. The system also shows that some popular destinations are introducing new rules to manage visitor numbers, which can affect how day trips are arranged.
