Transportation Security Administration (TSA) personnel at Long Island McArthur Airport recently prevented a potentially dangerous situation when they stopped a man from bringing a loaded handgun onto a flight. The incident, involving a Sayville, N.Y., resident who attempted to carry a 9mm handgun loaded with 10 bullets onto his flight on April 7th, marks a serious breach of airport security protocols.

The discovery was made during routine screening at the security checkpoint, where the TSA's advanced X-ray technology flagged the passenger's carry-on bag for containing the firearm. This marks the first instance in the year where TSA officers at the airport have intercepted a firearm at the checkpoint, underlining the effectiveness of their vigilant security measures.

Upon detecting the weapon, TSA officials swiftly involved local law enforcement agencies, including the Long Island McArthur Police and Suffolk County Police, who then permitted the individual to secure the firearm in his vehicle. Despite resolving the immediate threat, the man now faces a substantial federal financial civil penalty, which could amount to as much as $15,000, emphasizing the severe consequences of such security violations.

Robert Duffy, TSA’s Federal Security Director for the airport, commended the officers for their quick response, highlighting the risk and inconvenience introduced by bringing firearms to airport security checkpoints. He reminded travelers of the strict regulations surrounding air travel and firearms, pointing out that even those with concealed carry permits or TSA PreCheck® status are prohibited from bringing guns through security.

The TSA has long established clear guidelines for transporting firearms, requiring them to be unloaded, secured in a hard-sided locked case, and declared at the airline check-in counter for transport in checked baggage only. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of these rules, which are designed to ensure the safety and security of all passengers.
