Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), the Italian railway infrastructure operator, has announced significant service interruptions along the Rome to Naples railway line via Formia, scheduled between June 24 and July 6, 2025. Rail services between Latina and Formia will be fully halted from the evening of June 24 until June 26 to allow installation of a new digital control system. A second phase of works from June 27 to July 6 will lead to the closure of the Formia to Villa Literno section for infrastructure reinforcement.

These closures are part of a broader modernization plan valued at approximately 63 million euros. Main types of work include:

  • Implementation of ACCM, a centralized computerized traffic control system
  • Structural reinforcement and waterproofing of transport infrastructure
  • Safety upgrades in tunnels and geological risk mitigation
  • Widespread vegetation clearance along the rail corridor

Due to the closure between Latina and Formia several popular destinations in southern Lazio will become harder to reach for travelers. Visitors may face reduced access to Parco Nazionale del Circeo, a natural park with extensive trails and dunes, from key travel points. The coastal town of Terracina, famous for its ancient Roman ruins and sandy beaches, could see a drop in visitors. Priverno and its historic Abbey of Fossanova, a landmark of medieval Cistercian architecture, will also be more difficult to visit by train.

During the second phase of works from Formia to Villa Literno access to key tourist spots along the Tyrrhenian coast will be impacted. Gaeta, a seaside town with medieval towers and panoramic cliff walks, will have fewer direct rail links. Minturno, home to one of the most important archaeological parks in the region including a Roman amphitheater and baths will be harder to access. Baia Domizia, a family-favorite beach resort, is expected to experience fewer trains running during the closure.

Travelers intending to explore these regions in late June and early July are encouraged to stay informed through official announcements from RFI and Trenitalia. Considering other travel options such as buses or rental cars may reduce potential disruptions. Although travelers will face some temporary delays, these improvements are aimed at making the rail network safer and more dependable in the long run, showing Italy’s ongoing investment in its transportation system.
