Manchester Christmas Markets Return With Rail Warning
Manchester’s Christmas Markets return on Friday, 6 November, bringing more than 210 stalls to ten city-centre sites and a warning for rail visitors. Network Rail expects particularly busy evenings and weekends, with queues possible at Manchester Piccadilly as people head home. Transport for Greater Manchester has also announced evening closures at Deansgate railway station during the market season, so the nearest station may not always be available.
What to Know Before Visiting Manchester's Markets
- Dates: 6 November–22 December; Albert Square and Cathedral Gardens continue until 3 January.
- Entry: Free; food, gifts and skating cost extra.
- Hours: Most market stalls open 10:00–21:00; food service usually starts at 11:00.
- Deansgate: Station closes Fridays from 20:00 and Saturdays from 18:00.
- Piccadilly: Queues may be introduced for boarding.
- Getting home: Check your last train with National Rail; use Bee Network for tram alternatives.
Last year, 382,539 people passed through Manchester Piccadilly over the markets’ opening weekend, 11% more than the comparable weekend in 2024. Network Rail says queuing systems may be introduced at Manchester Piccadilly to manage crowds, but no widespread train cancellations have been announced. Northern and TransPennine Express are supporting the advice. Anyone heading home late should check their specific departure, especially if their usual journey uses Deansgate.
The ten market locations are close enough to explore on foot. Albert Square has a Ferris wheel, while new arrival Lincoln Square focuses on food stalls. Cathedral Gardens offers a covered ice rink, open until 3 January except Christmas Day, with skating charged separately. St Peter’s Square tram stop is four minutes’ walk from Albert Square; Victoria is two minutes from Cathedral Gardens.
Visiting after dark need not mean a lengthy wait for the last train. The biggest inconvenience is likely to be getting home, especially on Fridays and Saturdays when Deansgate closes early. Metrolink trams run into the night, and Bee Network has 24 tram park-and-ride sites for drivers. Its extended overnight parking arrangements begin on 12 November, not during the opening weekend.
