Gloucestershire Rail Works in July to Cause Delays and Route Changes for Travelers

Network Rail will carry out vital flood mitigation work at Chipping Sodbury tunnel in Gloucestershire from July 7 to 13, which will impact train travel between Swindon and Bristol Parkway. The project includes raising 200 meters of track by 20 centimeters and clearing drainage channels inside the tunnel to better handle water flow. Old drainage pumps are being replaced as part of the works, which should help trains keep running during downpours.

During the maintenance period, rail services between Swindon and Bristol Parkway will be suspended, with trains rerouted via Chippenham and Bath, leading to longer journey times. Service frequency between London and South Wales will also be reduced, particularly on July 20, when follow-up work is planned. To summarize, the key service changes are:

  • The rail line between Swindon and Bristol Parkway will be closed.
  • Trains diverted through Chippenham and Bath.
  • Reduced number of trains running between London and South Wales.
  • Additional peak-time trains operating between London Paddington and Swindon.

Anyone hoping to explore the Cotswold Hills, Cheddar Gorge, or the Roman Baths should allow extra time to get there. The Cotswolds, famous for its scenic countryside and villages, may require more time to reach due to rerouted trains. With altered train routes, getting to Cheddar Gorge could become more of a challenge for visitors. For those planning a visit to Bath, getting there might not be as straightforward next week.

Those planning trips to Cardiff Bay, the Brecon Beacons National Park, or Weston-super-Mare are likely to face travel challenges as well. Cardiff Bay’s waterfront attractions and entertainment venues may see fewer visitors because of reduced train services. Getting to the Brecon Beacons won’t be as simple during this period, especially if you’re relying on the train. Similarly, Weston-super-Mare’s seaside appeal may be impacted by the temporary reduction in rail connections.

It’s important passengers check their journeys in advance whilst we undertake this vital work to mitigate the impacts of flooding on the railway, as trains between Swindon and Bristol Parkway will take longer than usual, and there will be fewer services operating between south Wales and London.
Network Rail project manager George Barratt

Though the maintenance will cause short-term inconvenience, it is a key part of efforts to strengthen the railway’s resilience to flooding. The upgrades are part of long-term efforts to keep services running reliably, even when weather conditions are challenging. Passengers are encouraged to check official rail websites and plan journeys carefully to accommodate the expected delays and diversions.
