The historic Salt Stairs at Somerset House, once the centerpiece of Britain’s colonial Salt Office, are set to open in February as part of the "Salt Cosmologies" exhibition. This exhibition explores the historical impact of salt taxation, particularly in colonies like India, where it sparked resistance movements such as Gandhi’s famous Salt March. The stairs will serve as a venue for sound installations and art pieces that reflect the complex legacy of the Salt Office. This project aims to reframe history in a contemporary cultural context.

This restoration aligns with the 25th anniversary of Somerset House’s transformation into a cultural hub, while also acknowledging its imperial past. The Salt Stairs join other historic staircases in the building, highlighting its dual role as an art center and a former colonial administrative hub. Providing access to these spaces is part of Somerset House's effort to reimagine its history, preserving its authenticity while adding new meaning to its heritage.

Somerset House is also renowned for its impressive courtyard, which transforms with the seasons. In summer, it features a fountain with 55 jets that create a refreshing atmosphere, while in winter, it turns into a magical ice rink. These seasonal changes make the courtyard a popular tourist destination throughout the year. Visitors can enjoy cozy family outings or romantic evenings, making Somerset House appealing to a diverse audience.

Another major attraction at Somerset House is the Courtauld Gallery, famous for its masterpieces of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, including works by Monet, Degas, and Van Gogh. Its permanent collection is complemented by temporary exhibitions that draw visitors from around the world. The gallery offers a unique opportunity to experience art history in a comfortable and aesthetically pleasing environment, blending classical beauty with modern museum innovations.

The opening of the Salt Stairs, combined with other tourist highlights at Somerset House, showcases its evolution from a colonial administrative center into a hub of culture and creativity. The "Salt Cosmologies" exhibition allows visitors to reconsider the significance of colonial heritage and its impact on the present. Somerset House stands as a platform where art, history, and culture unite to create a unique experience, maintaining its importance for generations of tourists and locals alike.
