Fewer Apartment-Style Options for Marriott Guests After Sonder Split

Marriott International has decided to end its licensing agreement with Sonder Holdings after the company failed to meet contract terms. This means Sonder apartments are no longer listed on Marriott’s website or the Bonvoy app, and travelers can’t book them through Marriott’s system. The partnership was meant to blend hotel comfort with the flexibility of short-term rentals, but the cooperation has now officially come to an end.

Marriott says its main focus is helping guests who already booked a Sonder stay. Travelers who made reservations through Marriott’s channels, like Marriott's official website, the Bonvoy App, or call centers are being contacted directly to arrange alternatives or refunds. Those who booked via online travel agencies should reach out to those platforms. Marriott also confirmed that Bonvoy members can no longer earn or redeem points for Sonder stays.

This change could cause confusion for many travelers, especially for those who liked Sonder’s apartment-style spaces for long visits or work trips. The move narrows the selection of long-stay accommodations available through Marriott’s loyalty program. Guests who prefer more home-like stays may now have to look at Marriott’s other brands that focus on longer stays or consider independent serviced apartments outside the Bonvoy network.

The news also shows how unpredictable the travel accommodation market can be. Sonder had gained attention for offering stylish, tech-friendly apartments that appealed to remote workers and modern travelers. Its removal from Marriott’s listings may make it harder to find similar apartment-style options within major hotel loyalty programs, at least for now.

Viewed more broadly, the move highlights Marriott’s intention to reinforce its focus on dependable service and uphold uniform brand values. It’s a useful cue to check whether a property still belongs to a hotel chain before booking. Since collaborations in the travel industry can change suddenly, knowing who is responsible for your stay can reduce potential confusion and help make your trip more seamless.
