On July 18, American Airlines flight 2101 from Seattle to Dallas was forced to make an emergency landing in Salt Lake City due to the disruptive and dangerous behavior of a passenger, Eric Nicholas Gapco, 26, from Delanco, New Jersey. According to the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah, Gapco's actions were so severe that they posed a threat to the lives of everyone on board.

Eric Gapco began behaving erratically after consuming ten marijuana edibles, which he later admitted to not knowing the strength of. During the flight, Gapco removed his shirt, puffed on a vape pen, and propositioned a flight attendant for sex. He then attempted to open the plane’s door multiple times while shouting, "I am sane!"

Witnesses reported that Gapco also assaulted and intimidated a flight attendant, causing significant distress among passengers. In response to his dangerous behavior, several passengers intervened and restrained him until the flight could safely land.

Legal Actions and Charges

Upon landing at Salt Lake City International Airport, Gapco was arrested. During his arrest, he allegedly broke a glass door and spat on an officer. A Federal grand jury indicted Gapco on charges of interference with a flight crew and attempting to damage an aircraft. He is scheduled to make his initial appearance in federal court.

Video footage from the flight captures the chaotic scene, with flight staff attempting to control Gapco as he locked himself in the bathroom. The video also shows passengers assisting the flight crew by tying Gapco’s hands and feet to prevent further disturbances.

Public Reaction

The incident has sparked widespread attention on social media. Many users expressed concern over the legalization of marijuana, noting that such substances can turn a person into an uncontrollable lunatic. Comments also included condemnation and calls for a lifetime ban on flights for Gapco. Some pointed out that the incident demonstrates the need for strict safety measures on flights and accountability for one’s actions.

This incident underscores the importance of adhering to safety regulations and the need for vigilance and readiness among airline staff and passengers. Gapco's actions not only disrupted the flight but also posed a serious threat to everyone on board.
