El Al Stands Alone: Sole Airline Operating Nonstop US-Israel Flights This Summer

As summer approaches, El Al emerges as the sole provider of nonstop flights between the United States and Israel's Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv. Amidst ongoing regional conflicts, US airlines have halted their services, citing safety concerns due to escalating tensions with hostile groups.

While originally scheduled to resume nonstop flights from their East Coast hubs, major US carriers such as United Airlines have faced repeated cancellations. These disruptions have left El Al, Israel's national carrier, as the only airline servicing this route directly as the summer travel season nears.

United Airlines had briefly resumed flights from Newark to Tel Aviv in March, even operating with a stopover in Munich initially. However, the volatile geopolitical climate, particularly rising tensions between Israel and Iran, led to another suspension of their service. Although United planned a resumption in early May and even announced additional weekend services, these too have been postponed, with a new tentative start date in early June.

Currently, United Airlines advises passengers affected by these cancellations to consider rebooking on flights operated by other European-based Star Alliance members, like Lufthansa, which continue to offer routes to Israel through their respective hubs. However, for nonstop service, El Al remains the lone option.

El Al's commitment to safety is evident in its enhanced security measures, including the deployment of anti-missile defensive systems, which set it apart from other international carriers that lack these specialized protections.

Looking ahead, other airlines are preparing to re-enter the market. Air India is set to resume its long-haul flights to Israel by mid-May, and Air Canada plans to restart its nonstop services at the beginning of July, providing hopeful signs of a gradual normalization in air travel to and from Israel.

As the only airline currently offering nonstop flights between the US and Israel, El Al is navigating a complex landscape of safety concerns and regional instability. With other carriers poised to return, the upcoming months may see a broader resumption of air services, contingent on the evolving security situation in the region.
