In today’s world, online shopping has become an integral part of travelers' lives, but with this convenience comes an increased risk of falling into the traps of scammers. A recent warning from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) reveals a new type of internet scam targeting those making purchases online and encountering an unexpected card decline. This type of fraud can threaten your finances, especially while traveling, when every transaction matters.

How the Scam Works

The main goal of scammers is to trick users into believing their bank card has been declined when making purchases on fake websites that closely resemble popular platforms like Amazon. The user attempts to make a payment, but receives a notification that the transaction has failed, even though there are sufficient funds in the account. To resolve the issue, the traveler enters the details of another card, but the same problem occurs.

Scammers then gain access to both cards and can quickly start making unauthorized charges. If the person continues to enter additional card details, the problem worsens, giving scammers access to more financial information.

How to Protect Yourself

It is especially important to take precautions when making online payments, especially when traveling where connecting to public networks may increase the risk of hacking. Here are some recommendations to help avoid such situations:

  1. Verify the authenticity of the website. Before entering any details, ensure that the website is legitimate. Check for a secure protocol (https://) and carefully review the URL. Many scammers use clones of popular websites with minor changes in the address.
  2. Avoid re-entering card details. If your card is already saved on a trusted platform like Amazon or eBay, you don’t need to enter it again. A request to re-enter card details may be a sign that you are on a fake website.
  3. Use credit cards instead of debit cards. Credit cards generally offer better fraud protection. In the case of unauthorized charges, recovering funds from a credit card is often easier and faster than from a debit card.
  4. Monitor notifications from your bank. Quick alerts about suspicious transactions will help you block your card in time and prevent further charges.

Modern travel requires increased attention to security, not only when choosing routes and booking accommodations but also in protecting your financial data. Be cautious when making online purchases, especially on new or unfamiliar websites. Regularly checking your account balances and staying alert when using cards will help safeguard your funds and avoid unpleasant situations that could ruin your trip.
