Passengers traveling across Great Britain now have access to real-time Visual Disruption Maps, which provide concise updates when train services are delayed or disrupted. These short videos are produced within 30 minutes of an incident and detail what has occurred, the impact on train services, and practical actions for travelers. The videos are available through National Rail Enquiries’ website, mobile application, and social media channels, offering multiple ways for passengers to obtain timely information during unexpected travel interruptions.

The Visual Disruption Maps are part of the Smarter Information, Smarter Journeys programme, managed collaboratively by the Rail Delivery Group, Network Rail, and train operators. The programme aims to enhance the delivery of customer information by providing videos in addition to traditional text updates. The video format presents incidents clearly and consistently, helping passengers to understand the situation, identify potential alternatives, and adjust travel plans according to the real-time impact on services.

“We know how frustrating it is when passengers' journeys are disrupted - and that frustration is made worse when they can't find out what's happening or are unable to find the information needed to get them where they need to be. The roll out of the visual disruption maps is a great example of the industry working together, putting customers first by providing clear, real-time information that passengers can access quickly to see what's happening and plan their onward journeys."
Malcom Pitt, Head of Customer Experience and Accessibility at Network Rail

These visual updates offer a practical tool to respond to sudden disruptions, such as flooding, signal failures, or infrastructure issues. Each video presents the effect on scheduled services and possible options for alternative routes or adjusted departure times. By centralizing these details, passengers no longer have to check multiple sources, allowing them to make rapid and informed choices. These updates aim to help passengers organize their onward travel in a more effective and streamlined manner.

Accessibility features are included in visual disruption maps, with subtitles and British Sign Language where possible. Updates are provided daily, Monday to Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and on weekends from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., ensuring that information is always available across the rail network. This approach ensures that passengers with different needs can receive clear and understandable information, promoting inclusivity and guaranteeing equal access to essential updates whenever service disruptions occur.

The introduction of real-time disruption maps provides a structured and timely method of communicating train disruptions across the UK. Passengers can use this information to make informed decisions and adapt effectively to delays. The initiative reflects a broader trend in the rail industry toward offering real-time, accessible, and standardized information, giving travelers greater clarity, reducing uncertainty, and improving the management of journeys during unplanned interruptions.
