New rules for entry: Spain to ease arriving procedure
Soon, non-EU travellers may be exempt from the passport stamping procedure upon arrival in Spain. The reason for this is Spain's transition to an updated electronic document verification system for foreign nationals.
Thus, starting from 2024, the arrival of foreigners to the Schengen area will be registered by the automated entry/exit system (EES). The Coventry Telegraph noted that the updated system will record tourists from non-EU countries every time they cross the external border of an EU country.
Thus, from the day this mechanism is introduced, travellers will have to scan their passports at a special self-service kiosk before crossing the border. It is reported that the EES control system will record the name, type of document used, date, actual place of entry/exit and biometric data of the person.
It is currently known that 25 EU countries and 4 Schengen countries, including Norway and Iceland, intend to introduce this method of registration. The new programme is expected to be launched around October this year.
