More Hotel Choices Ahead as Scandic Expands into Ireland and the UK

Scandic Hotels Group has announced plans to acquire the operational business of Dalata Hotel Group, one of Ireland’s leading hospitality firms. The agreement depends on the successful takeover of Dalata by a consortium made up of Pandox AB and Eiendomsspar AS. If approved, the deal will result in Scandic taking over 56 hotels with 53 under lease agreements and three managed properties. These hotels are mainly located in Ireland and the United Kingdom, with completion expected by the end of 2026.
This move would add nearly 12000 rooms to Scandic’s portfolio along with a development pipeline of approximately 1900 additional rooms. During a transitional period following the consortium’s acquisition of Dalata, Scandic will manage the properties under a short-term contract. Key details of the agreement include:
- Temporary operational management of Dalata hotels by Scandic before full transfer
- Retention of Dalata’s real estate assets by the acquiring consortium
- Full focus by Scandic on operating activities, not property ownership
- Integration of 56 hotels into Scandic’s existing network
- Expansion into primarily Ireland and UK markets
- Alignment with broader consolidation trends in the European hospitality sector
Scandic has a strong platform, making us well-positioned to deliver on our 2030 strategy. At the same time, we are always open to new business opportunities that can create more value for our stakeholders. Dalata is a high-performing operator with strong brands and leading or established positions in attractive markets.
Guests visiting Ireland will benefit from expanded accommodation options in major destinations. In Dublin those staying at one of these hotels will be within walking distance of George’s Street Arcade which is a historic market featuring independent food stalls and handmade goods. In Galway visitors may enjoy access to Salthill Promenade offering sea views and open space for walking or cycling. In Belfast hotel patrons can easily explore St George’s Market which hosts local food vendors and artisan products.
Across the UK similar improvements are expected for individuals booking short or extended stays. In Birmingham those staying in the central area will find themselves close to the Custard Factory which is a well-known creative and entertainment district. In Manchester guests could explore Afflecks, a multi-level venue offering alternative fashion art and independent shops. Properties located near Dean Village in Edinburgh will give guests easy access to a peaceful riverside area, well suited for walking and taking photos.

This acquisition is likely to influence the accommodation experience by improving hotel availability and introducing consistent service levels across multiple locations. Visitors may benefit from simplified booking systems, shared loyalty programs and expanded choices during busy periods. While the changes won’t happen immediately, the move points to a more organized and possibly more cost-effective way of staying in the region’s top travel spots.
