Rail passengers in South Wales should prepare for significant travel changes in mid-July as infrastructure upgrades are scheduled between Barry and Bridgend. Network Rail will carry out drainage improvements and track maintenance from 10:00 p.m. on Sunday 13 July until 5:10 a.m. on Saturday 19 July. During this period, all train services through Rhoose which serves Cardiff International Airport and Bridgend will be suspended. Replacement buses will operate to maintain limited connections across the affected areas.

Additional service changes will take place between Port Talbot Parkway and Llanelli. From 00:25 on Friday 19 July until 12:25 on Sunday 20 July, passengers should expect the following adjustments:

  • Replacement buses will operate instead of early morning and late-night trains
  • Certain services may be diverted depending on the time of travel
  • Changes to departure times and platforms are likely

The maintenance forms part of scheduled upgrades designed to modernize drainage beneath the railway and carry out key condition assessments to strengthen the network’s durability.

Travellers hoping to explore less urban areas may face complications reaching outdoor destinations. Merthyr Mawr Sand Dunes near Bridgend, known for its expansive walking trails and unique landscapes, could become harder to access without direct rail service. The Glamorgan Heritage Coast, extending west from Barry and featuring scenic cliffside walking trails, might experience a drop in visitors because of reduced public transport options. The availability of services to Porthcawl Promenade, a favored seaside stroll, may be limited while the maintenance work is underway.

Further west, other scenic spots may also be impacted. Burry Port Harbour, which attracts visitors for its coastal views and walking areas, is expected to be less accessible during early and late service hours. Access to Kidwelly Castle Grounds, a popular spot for both history enthusiasts and nature lovers, could be more challenging because of changes to train schedules. Those visiting Pembrey Country Park, known for its sandy beaches and forest trails, should plan for longer travel times or look into different transport options.

While the disruptions are temporary they underline the importance of advance planning for those visiting South Wales during the busy summer period. This initiative is designed to bolster the rail network and shield critical infrastructure from damage linked to flooding and drainage failures. Checking live updates and revised bus schedules will help travellers avoid unnecessary delays and ensure continued access to the region’s natural attractions.
