An Alaska Airlines Embraer E175 aircraft made an unexpected diversion to Portland International Airport (PDX) on July 28, 2024, due to a malfunction with the plane's nose gear. The flight, which was en route from San Francisco to Seattle, safely landed without incident, thanks to the quick response and professionalism of the flight crew and ground support teams.

Incident Details

Flight AS346, operated by Alaska Airlines, departed from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) at 10:30 AM local time. Shortly after takeoff, the flight crew detected an issue with the nose gear, which failed to retract properly. Following standard safety protocols, the pilots decided to divert to the nearest suitable airport, which was Portland International Airport, to assess and address the mechanical problem.

Safe Landing

The Embraer E175, carrying 76 passengers and four crew members, landed safely at PDX at approximately 11:45 AM. Emergency services were on standby as a precautionary measure, but the landing was smooth, and no injuries were reported. Passengers were informed about the technical issue and reassured by the crew throughout the incident.

Passenger Reactions

Despite the unexpected diversion, passengers remained calm and praised the flight crew for their clear communication and professionalism. One passenger, Emily Rogers, shared her experience, stating, "The crew handled the situation exceptionally well. They kept us informed and made sure we were comfortable and safe at all times. We're grateful for their competence and quick thinking."

Response and Investigation

Alaska Airlines promptly issued a statement thanking the flight crew for their effective handling of the situation and ensuring the safety of all on board. The airline also expressed appreciation for the swift response of the ground support teams at Portland International Airport.

The Embraer E175 was taken out of service for a thorough inspection and maintenance to determine the cause of the nose gear malfunction. Alaska Airlines confirmed that all affected passengers were rebooked on the next available flights to their final destinations, with additional accommodations provided as needed.

Commitment to Safety

This incident underscores Alaska Airlines' commitment to safety and their rigorous adherence to safety protocols. The airline has a strong track record of prioritizing passenger and crew safety, regularly conducting maintenance checks and crew training to handle such situations effectively.
