New research from ABTA indicates that the UK's persistent gloomy weather this year is driving many to consider last-minute holidays abroad. The survey shows that 27% of respondents are inclined to book a trip if they find a good deal to a sunny destination, while 19% are motivated purely by the desire to escape the UK's poor weather.

The Scots are particularly eager, with 31% looking for deals to sunny destinations and 27% aiming to escape the rain. This trend follows the UK's wettest spring since 1986, with forecasts showing little improvement for sunseekers through August.

Popular European destinations like Costa del Sol, the Algarve, the Istrian coast, and the Greek islands are expecting daily sunshine in the coming week. ABTA advises that there are still opportunities for late summer deals, especially for those flexible with their travel dates and destinations.

ABTA's Director of Communications, Graeme Buck, highlights the ongoing interest in last-minute bookings despite many already having summer plans. He encourages potential travelers to consult their local ABTA travel agent or tour operator to find the best available deals.

To help secure the best last-minute holidays, ABTA offers several tips. Flexibility with departure times and points can lead to better deals, and being open to new destinations can provide unique travel experiences. Booking through an ABTA agent or operator can offer access to a wider range of holidays and potential discounts, with package holidays often being more cost-effective and stress-free.

In summary, while the UK's summer weather remains bleak, the allure of sunny escapes and good deals is strong among residents. With the right approach and some flexibility, there are still many opportunities to enjoy a sun-filled holiday this summer.
