The Ministry of Transport recently announced a comprehensive study focusing on the coastal route between Bergen and Kirkenes, aiming to assess future needs and environmental impacts for the forthcoming tender period.

Appointed by the Ministry of Transport, Oslo Economics will spearhead the study, delving into various aspects such as transportation requirements, environmental footprints, and the potential for imposing more rigorous environmental standards, as stated in an official press release. Minister of Transport, Jon-Ivar Nygård, emphasized the importance of understanding coastal transportation needs while prioritizing environmental sustainability.

Havila Voyages, currently one of the primary operators on the Bergen – Kirkenes – Bergen route, welcomes the initiative. The company expressed optimism, highlighting the significance of early preparations for the upcoming tender call. Despite operational challenges and the pandemic's impact, Havila Voyages remains committed to its societal mission of facilitating long-distance passenger and cargo transport.

Looking ahead, the importance of promptly outlining requirements for the next tender round to provide clarity for potential operators was stressed. The time-intensive nature of shipbuilding and operational adjustments was underscored, emphasizing the need for timely announcements to facilitate seamless transitions.

Furthermore, Havila Voyages advocates for stricter environmental standards, viewing them as essential for preserving Norway's pristine coastal environment for future generations. The commitment to environmentally friendly transportation solutions was applauded, urging authorities to seize the opportunity to lead the maritime industry towards sustainability.

In light of these developments, ordinary travelers stand to benefit from cleaner and more environmentally sustainable coastal journeys. Stricter emissions standards and enhanced environmental regulations could lead to improved air quality, reduced ecological impact, and a more enjoyable experience for passengers exploring Norway's scenic coastlines.

Contrary to skepticism about technological readiness, it was asserted that Havila Voyages has already demonstrated the feasibility of emission-free sailing in World Heritage fjords, well ahead of regulatory deadlines. The company's ambition to transition the entire coastal route to emission-free operations using existing fleet capabilities, such as bio gas and hydrogen propulsion, was outlined.
