In a recent announcement, Esteve Camps, president of the organization overseeing the Sagrada Familia's construction, revealed that the famous cathedral will finally be completed in 2026, marking the end of a 144-year journey.

Esteve Camps' press release has thrilled the millions of tourists who visit the Sagrada Familia annually. The cathedral, one of Europe’s most beloved landmarks, is nearing the end of its lengthy construction process. The final phase includes completing the Evangelist Towers and building the Chapel of the Assumption and the towering Jesus Tower, which will stand at 172.5 meters. The Assumption Chapel is expected to be finished by 2025, while the Jesus Tower and other final touches, including sculptures and ornamental details, will be completed by 2034.

Designed by Barcelona’s famed architect Antoni Gaudí in 1882, the Sagrada Familia has faced numerous delays. Gaudí’s death in 1926 was a significant setback. Further disruptions came with the Spanish Civil War, during which the architect’s studio, housing critical models and plans, was destroyed in a fire. This destruction significantly hindered progress for years.

More recently, the COVID-19 pandemic caused further delays, halting work on the already slow-moving project. However, construction has resumed with renewed vigor, aiming for substantial completion by the centenary of Gaudí’s death in 2026.

Once complete, the Sagrada Familia will not only stand as a monument to Gaudí’s visionary genius but also as a symbol of resilience and determination. The basilica has witnessed numerous historical events, each leaving its mark on the project. Despite these challenges, the structure has continued to rise, year after year, brick by brick.

The final construction phase marks a significant milestone in the basilica's history. When the Jesus Tower is completed, it will be the tallest church tower in the world, standing as a testament to Gaudí's ambition and the dedication of countless artisans and laborers over the past century.

Visitors and locals alike are eagerly anticipating the completion of this architectural marvel. As the finishing touches are added, the Sagrada Familia will continue to inspire awe and admiration, drawing people from around the globe to witness its grandeur. This iconic cathedral, with its intricate facades and towering spires, will finally achieve the completion Gaudí envisioned over a century ago, solidifying its place as one of the most extraordinary architectural achievements in history.
