Planned Rail Works to Impact Night Trains Between Llandudno and Holyhead
No trains will run between Llandudno Junction and Holyhead during the night from 14 to 18 July 2025, as crews carry out planned work on the tracks. The closure will affect one of North Wales’ key railway corridors, with trains replaced by buses each night from 11 PM until 7:45 AM. Anyone travelling at those hours should be ready for a different route and a bit more time on the road.
The affected stretch of track serves both tourists and local residents, particularly those making connections at Holyhead for ferry crossings. The timing of the work coincides with the start of the summer peak, when demand on the route typically increases. While daytime services are expected to run normally, the overnight changes could influence how some travellers organise their arrival or departure.
During the night shift, teams will tackle different kinds of repair and upkeep jobs along the route. Among them are:
- Tunnel inspections to check structural condition and ensure safe operation
- Rail track testing to detect faults and maintain smooth travel conditions
- Stoneblowing, which involves placing small stones beneath the tracks to correct alignment
- Drainage improvements aimed at managing water runoff and reducing risks from heavy rain or localised flooding
Buses will run between the affected stations, but the ride might take a bit longer than usual and could go along different roads, depending on what’s open and accessible at night. These changes will mostly affect people travelling around the northwestern part of Wales, where the rail line runs close to the coast. Travellers heading to seaside towns or planning a night-time transfer should check route information ahead of time and allow for possible delays and longer travel times.
This short pause in night trains is a good cue for travellers to keep an eye on updates and be ready to shift plans if needed during the busy summer season. While the short-term changes may pose challenges for those relying on overnight travel, these works are part of ongoing efforts to ensure stable and reliable rail operations. For now, being aware of the changes and adjusting plans accordingly will be important for anyone using this part of the rail network.
