Lufthansa Group intends to upgrade its short- and medium-haul aircraft by equipping more than 150 Airbus A220/320 family aircraft (including A220, A319, A320ceo, A320neo, A321ceo, A321neo) with broadband internet.

Installation of this broadband system will begin across all airlines in the fourth quarter of 2024 and is expected to be completed within two years. Following Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines and Eurowings, SWISS will be the next Lufthansa Group airline to introduce in-flight internet for passengers on short- and medium-haul routes. Since 2017, Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, and Eurowings have been offering passengers broadband internet access on many of their short- and medium-haul flights, Travel And Tour World reports.

Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines offer unlimited free messaging for passengers on planes equipped with internet access. Passengers can freely send and receive messages on their smartphones or tablets throughout the flight.

To access this service, passengers need to log in to FlyNet using their Miles & More service card number or the email address associated with their Lufthansa Group Travel ID.

Moreover, since the beginning of the year, prices for other onboard internet packages, including the faster Premium access starting from six euros, have been reduced by almost 50%.

Access to Lufthansa Group Airlines' apps and various services via Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines' FlyNet portal, Eurowings' Wings Connect portal, and the upcoming SWISS Connect portal is generally free of charge on all Airbus A220/A320 aircraft equipped with broadband internet.

Furthermore, in-flight internet is utilized by crews for various tasks, such as optimizing flight routes during travel, aiding in reducing fuel consumption, and associated CO2 emissions. Lufthansa Group has contracted Viasat to provide technology and services to equip over 150 additional aircraft.
