A major phase of the Transpennine Route Upgrade will close Huddersfield and Slaithwaite stations for more than two weeks this autumn, affecting rail journeys across parts of northern England. The work will reshape platforms at Huddersfield, extend the station subway and progress reconstruction at Deighton. Services between Stalybridge and Mirfield will also change, with some trains diverted and others replaced by buses.

What Changes Between 19 September and 4 October

  • Huddersfield and Slaithwaite: Closed 19 September–4 October; reopen 5 October
  • Mossley, Greenfield and Marsden: Closed 19–20 September and 3–4 October
  • Brighouse car park: Closed 18 September–5 October; reopens 6 October
  • Brighouse: Station remains open and will be the main interchange between trains and replacement buses
  • Services: Some trains will use diversionary routes, while replacement buses will operate where rail services cannot run
  • Journey times: Longer trips are expected during the works
  • Before travelling: Check National Rail or the relevant train operator for amended timetables
"This is another significant stage in the transformation of Huddersfield station and the wider railway. While we know there will be some disruption while this work takes place, these upgrades are essential to delivering the more reliable, accessible and higher-capacity railway that customers deserve."
Sophie Leishman, TRU sponsor

Rail journeys through the area will vary depending on the route, with some trains diverted around the closed section and replacement buses used where services cannot operate. Brighouse will become the main interchange for rail and bus connections during the works. Anyone travelling between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and nearby stations should expect longer journey times and check amended timetables before setting out, particularly over the two affected weekends.

Once completed, the wider programme should improve links between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York, with more capacity and better station access across the route. Longer trains will add seats, while extra tracks and digital signalling are designed to reduce bottlenecks. Future electrification should also support faster and more frequent services between the major cities and smaller communities along the Transpennine corridor.

"This work is only possible because of the close collaboration between the range of rail industry teams involved in the Transpennine Route Upgrade. By working together, we're delivering one of the biggest railway upgrades in the North while continuing to keep customers and communities connected."
Chris Nutton, Major Projects & TRU Director at TransPennine Express

Anyone travelling through Huddersfield during the closure should allow extra time and check the timetable again shortly before departure, as some journeys will involve buses or unfamiliar interchange points. The disruption will not end entirely in October either: a further 38-day Huddersfield station closure is planned after the last service on Christmas Eve, so winter journeys will need another round of careful planning.
