According to Ryanair’s September survey, online travel agencies such as eDreams, Tix, and Vola regularly overcharge travelers compared with the airline’s official website. The report, released on Tuesday, 9 September, points out that these OTAs operate without formal agreements with the airline, allowing them to set independent prices. Such practices have driven up costs for seat reservations and additional services, affecting travelers across multiple European nations.

The findings point to eDreams as one of the main instances of excessive charges by OTAs. Passengers using these OTAs face several challenges, including:

  • Paying substantially more for seat reservations
  • Incurring higher fees for optional services
  • Encountering hidden charges that reduce pricing transparency
  • Difficulty in understanding the total cost of trave

The report draws attention to how non-transparent pricing by OTAs affects passengers more widely. Unanticipated extra costs can disrupt budgeting and make planning more complex, especially for those securing several services or tickets. Awareness of these practices is crucial, as it encourages consumers to approach online travel bookings with caution and to anticipate potential extra costs when using third-party platforms across Europe. Being aware of these challenges allows travelers to anticipate uncertainties and plan their trips more effectively.

The survey also underscores the need for stronger regulatory oversight of OTA pricing. The airline urges European authorities to enforce clear pricing standards for every online travel service. More transparent and consistent pricing may reduce confusion, prevent unexpected fees, and create fairer conditions for consumers using online travel platforms. Regulatory improvements would support greater clarity for passengers in all affected regions.

“We continue to call on EU Govts and Consumer Protection Authorities to take urgent action against these OTA overcharges, which are causing real harm to consumers all over Europe and particularly in Spain where the overcharging OTA, eDreams, has a large footprint and is harming thousands of consumers."
Ryanair’s Dara Brady

The Ryanair report demonstrates the wider implications of OTA overcharging for European passengers. It highlights that non-transparent pricing can lead to extra charges and make organizing travel less predictable. The survey demonstrates that understanding price structures is crucial, promoting vigilance when using online booking tools and emphasizing transparency within the expanding travel sector.
