Baggage is loaded onto a conveyor belt just a few meters from the check-in counters in the restricted area. It goes through an automatic identification process and is then loaded onto the plane, all in just three and a half minutes. This is the new automatic baggage control system in Terminals 1 and 2 of Barcelona Airport, which was installed six months ago.

Behind the "Restricted Access" signs is the Automated Baggage Transfer System (SATE), a 2.1 km conveyor belt that can analyze 7,200 pieces of baggage per hour. A total of twelve screening machines use a state-of-the-art computed tomography system similar to that used in the medical field, reports Catalannews.com.

According to Spanish airport management company Aena, the new system improves baggage screening and provides a smoother baggage handling process.

The new system meets the requirements of the new EU regulations on the Explosive Detection System (EDS), Standard 3.

From check-in to service in 3.5 minutes

In three and a half minutes, each piece of baggage passes the first level of automated EDS management, from where it is distributed to a handling company that delivers the baggage to the cargo hold of the aircraft.

80% of suitcases pass through the new system without any problems, compared to 50% in the previous system.

EU rules provide for up to four additional screening stages, which may slow down the process.

If the luggage looks suspicious, it goes through a second screening, where security personnel analyze it.

If, after this second phase, it is believed that the bag still contains an object that could jeopardize flight safety, it is sent through a third scanner controlled by the Spanish police, la Guardia Civil.

This inspection can take several minutes and, if necessary, the passenger may be called to explain the contents of the bag.
