Weekend Rail Closures to Disrupt Travel Between London and East Midlands
Train services between London and the East Midlands will face major interruptions on the weekends of 24 to 25 May and 31 May to 1 June. East Midlands Railway will not operate south of Bedford, and Thameslink services will be suspended between Bedford and Harpenden or Mill Hill Broadway. During these dates, replacement buses will run instead of trains, and passengers should prepare for longer journeys and limited direct connections.
The disruptions are caused by the final stage of infrastructure works on the Midland Main Line aimed at modernizing the railway. Engineers are upgrading overhead power lines, drainage systems, and signal equipment. The project, ongoing since February, is essential to support new bi-mode trains and improve future service reliability. National Rail states that while these upgrades are essential, they will cause temporary disruptions to travel plans.

The weekend of 24 May overlaps with the Championship Play-Off Final at Wembley and several music festivals near Stevenage and Hatfield, which will increase demand on alternative routes.
