Network Rail will carry out essential maintenance on the railway line between Barry and Bridgend from 10:00 p.m. on Sunday 13 July until 5:10 a.m. on Saturday 19 July. The work involves upgrading the drainage under the tracks and carrying out essential repairs to enhance long-term reliability. During this period, all train services between Rhoose, which serves Cardiff International Airport, and Bridgend will be suspended.

Replacement bus services will operate along the affected section throughout the closure. Additionally, from 12:25 a.m. on Friday 19 July until 12:25 p.m. on Sunday 20 July, some trains between Port Talbot Parkway and Llanelli will be diverted or replaced by buses. Changes during this period include:

  • Replacement buses between Rhoose and Bridgend;
  • Diversions or bus replacements for some trains between Port Talbot Parkway and Llanelli (from early Friday 19 July to midday Sunday 20 July);
  • Work carried out both during the day and overnight to minimise disruption;
  • Advice for passengers to plan ahead, expect schedule changes, and check for updates before travelling.

Several popular destinations will become more difficult to access by public transport during the works. For example, Porthcawl, a well-known seaside resort famous for its beaches and summer events, will be harder to reach. Barry Island, a coastal area with family-friendly attractions and traditional seaside entertainment, will also face reduced train access. Visitors to McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Bridgend might face delays because of suspended train services and the use of replacement buses.

Further west, travel disruptions will affect towns such as Burry Port, known for its marina and scenic coastal trails, making it less accessible for tourists. Llanelli beach, popular for water sports and outdoor activities, may also see fewer visitors reliant on train travel. Travel to Carmarthen, a historic town with bustling shops and eateries, could become more challenging because of route diversions and bus substitutions.

While the maintenance work will cause temporary inconvenience, it is an important step toward improving rail infrastructure resilience. Upgrading drainage reduces flooding risks and limits weather-related delays, which should benefit passengers in the long term. Travellers are advised to plan journeys carefully, allow extra time, and explore alternative transport options where possible. The improvements aim to ensure smoother and more dependable travel to Cardiff Airport and key destinations throughout South Wales in the long term.
