Rio de Janeiro: A Top Destination for LGBTQIA+ Travelers
In a remarkable recognition of its vibrant culture and inclusivity, Rio de Janeiro has been named one of the top destinations for LGBTQIA+ tourism. The city, known for its breathtaking landscapes and spirited atmosphere, secured a place among the top ten in the GayCities magazine's rankings, a testament to its appeal in the international LGBTQIA+ community.
The ranking, which is a reflection of the opinions of 100,000 internet users, places Rio de Janeiro in the eighth position, amidst other renowned global cities. Leading the list are Mykonos, Greece; Amsterdam, Netherlands; and Barcelona, Spain. The list also features Paris, Queenstown, Hawaii, and Phuket, showcasing Rio's impressive stature among these sought-after destinations.
According to travel2latam, Rio's allure in the LGBTQIA+ tourism sector is further highlighted with the inclusion of the iconic Copacabana Palace in the list of the best hotels. This historic beachfront hotel, which celebrated its centenary last year, is ranked fifth, sharing the spotlight with world-class accommodations like Hawaii's Four Seasons Maui and Iceland's The Retreat at Blue Lagoon.
In addition to these rankings, Passport Magazine, a New York-based international publication specializing in LGBTQIA+ tourism, featured São Paulo and Ubatuba as gay-friendly destinations. This coverage reinforces Brazil's image as an inclusive and diverse tourist hotspot.
Marcelo Freixo, the president of Embratur, emphasized the agency's ongoing efforts to promote Brazil as an inclusive, diverse, and sustainable destination. He pointed out that such international recognition aligns with their goal to position Brazil as a welcoming and pluralistic country, enhancing its attractiveness to global tourists.
Tania Neres, Embratur's coordinator for Diversity, Afrotourism, and Indigenous Peoples, echoed these sentiments. She highlighted Rio de Janeiro's pivotal role as a gateway for LGBTQIA+ tourism in Brazil. Neres also mentioned the establishment of a Diversity Coordination at Embratur to further promote Brazil as a friendly destination for the gay community. Cities like Belo Horizonte, Salvador, and Florianópolis were noted for their dedication to serving the LGBTQIA+ market with respect and safety.
These recognitions and efforts not only showcase Rio de Janeiro and Brazil's commitment to diversity and inclusivity but also mark a significant step towards catering to the needs and preferences of the LGBTQIA+ community, making Brazil a preferred destination for travelers seeking a welcoming and vibrant experience.
