Railway Services Back on Track Following Grange-over-Sands Derailment

A month after a train derailment rocked Grange-over-Sands on March 22, 2024, rail services between Lancaster and Barrow-in-Furness are finally back in operation. Passengers have been commended for their understanding during the disruption.

Network Rail engineers have toiled tirelessly to restore the railway at Grange-over-Sands following the derailment of a Northern train. The incident uncovered a void in the ground, located approximately 150 meters from where the train left the tracks.

Phil James, Network Rail’s North West route director, expressed gratitude to passengers for their patience throughout the extensive repair process. He acknowledged the complexity of the recovery and repair efforts, emphasizing the collaborative work with the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) to determine the cause of the derailment.

Craig Harrop, Northern's regional director in the North West, echoed appreciation for passengers' understanding during the rail infrastructure repairs. He emphasized the significance of resuming rail services on the Furness Line to reconnect customers with the broader network.

Engineers removed 400 tonnes of soil from the embankments and installed almost 84 tonnes of new materials to repair the damage at the location.As investigations into the derailment continue, Network Rail remains focused on ensuring the safety and reliability of railway services for passengers in the region.
