Canada announced the resumption of visa issuing for Mexican citizens
The Canadian government has announced its intention to resume issuing visas to Mexican nationals. The reason for this initiative is the high demand for asylum applications in the country, which accounted for 17% of all asylum applications in Canada in 2023.
Thus, to come to Canada, Mexican citizens will have to obtain a visa. However, only those citizens who have held a Canadian visa in the last decade or if they have a valid visa to the United States of America will be able to apply for a simple electronic permit, Courthouse News Service reports.
It is noted that according to migration data, last year about 24,000 people from Mexico applied for asylum in the country, most of which were rejected or postponed. According to Canadian Immigration Minister Marc Miller, some Mexican citizens "come through Canada and then go to the United States."
In addition, Miller said that the Mexican government has expressed its dissatisfaction with the new visa requirements that Canada has introduced. Instead, he added, "We attach great importance to our close ties with Mexico. Mexico is and will remain an important partner."
