A Wizz Air passenger travelling from London Gatwick to Santorini says she was nearly prevented from boarding after a dispute over the size of her cabin bag. Katy Hayward, 21, was travelling with two friends when gate staff pulled the group aside and said their bags were too large. Hayward later said the confrontation left her crying and having a panic attack at the gate.

What Happened at the Wizz Air Gate

  • Airline: Wizz Air
  • Route: London Gatwick to Santorini
  • Passenger: Katy Hayward, 21
  • Bag size: 40 × 30 × 20cm, matching Wizz Air’s published under-seat allowance
  • Issue at the gate: Staff said the bags were too large
  • Extra baggage fee: None charged
  • Outcome: Hayward and her friends were eventually allowed to board
  • Airline response: Wizz Air said the incident had been raised with its ground handling partner for review

Hayward and her friends said the bags had been bought specifically to match Wizz Air’s published under-seat dimensions and were never tested in the airport sizer. Another gate employee eventually intervened and allowed the group to board without an extra baggage charge. Wizz Air said the staff member worked for a contracted ground handler and that the incident had been raised with the company for review.

The incident is a useful reminder to check cabin-bag rules before reaching the gate, especially on low-cost airlines where allowances are tightly defined. Keeping a screenshot of the airline’s current baggage policy and taking a quick photo of the bag beside a measuring tape or airport sizer can help if its size is questioned. Travellers should also leave enough time to resolve disputes before boarding closes.

“We take any suggestion that these standards have not been met very seriously and have raised this issue with the relevant ground handling partner to determine what happened and ensure it is addressed appropriately."
A Wizz Air spokesperson told Sun Travel

A cabin bag that appears compliant can still become a problem if its size is challenged at the gate, where there is little time to argue the point. Measuring luggage before departure, keeping the airline’s rules accessible on a phone and arriving at the gate early can reduce the risk. If a dispute occurs, asking for a supervisor or another staff member may be more effective than prolonging an argument.
